What often makes Utopia interesting is the International aspect of the entire Exhibition. The story of a German emigration group coming to America is a project for a team residing on “both sides of the pond” today. German history is explained by German archivists, photographers and film makers, while the American story had also been studied here for many years. German film maker Peter Roloff had been studying the story, and the Traveling Summer Republic began revisiting it in 2005. When they (Traveling Summer Republic) questioned historians in the United States about the Society in 2009, it opened a whole new window on the subject for writers, teachers, artists and photographers on both continents. Utopia is always in both languages, German and English. And while telling a story of two countries can be a bit of a challenge, it also helps us both to take a step back and look at the issues that we both faced – immigration, emigration, nationality and nativism – and still wrestle with today. Addressing those issues today, may bring us all closer to a true Utopia in the future.

In a week “Utopia” will be ready to make a stop at its next destination, Bremen. Those who do not have an opportunity to visit the exhibit in Germany’s north will not have to miss out on the historical information about the Giessen Emigration Society. The publications about “Utopia” are the subject of this newsletter.
The “Utopia” book – published by Falkenberg Edition – is the first detailed depiction of the Giessen Emigration Society’s history from 1834 to accompany the exhibit. The book is written in German and English throughout and chronologically follows the history of the society from its homeland departure to its settlement in Missouri. Included are supplementary and extended texts by guest authors and the creators of the exhibit dealing with the politically motivated emigration of the 19th century. The book is in color throughout and its 352 pages contain large-format photos by Folker Winkelmann and offers numerous, largely unpublished, illustrations from archives and private collections. After the exhibit’s opening in November, 2013 the book also became available in the USA from the University of Chicago Press.
Since the founding of the Traveling Summer Republic, Rolf Schmidt has participated in the research and presentation of the Giessen Emigration Society. Together with Ulla Schmidt, he published a reprint and English translation of the “Call and Declaration on the Subject of Mass Emigration from Germany to the North America Free States.”, that is also available now in the USA.
“Stay or Leave—the Giessen Emigration Society” is the title of the exhibit’s educational publication for teachers and pupils at the secondary school level. The publication was developed by students under the leadership of Rita Rohrbach in a project seminar on the teaching methodology of history and cultural studies at the Historical Institute of Giessen’s Justus-Liebig-University. Pupils from today can, through this example, understand the reasons, course and difficulties of the process of migration and integration, and also develop an exemplary example of global history. The pupil’s booklet was published in German and English and can be downloaded free of charge from the exhibit’s website.

In weniger als einer Woche ist es soweit und der „Aufbruch in die Utopie“ macht Halt an seiner nächsten Station, Bremen. Doch auch wer keine Gelegenheit hat, die Ausstellung in Deutschlands Norden zu besuchen, muss nicht auf Informationen zur Geschichte der Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft verzichten. Die Publikationen rund um Utopia sind das Thema dieses Newsletters.
Der in der Edition Falkenberg erschienene Begleitband zur Ausstellung ist die erste ausführliche Darstellung zu Geschichte und Umfeld der Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft von 1834. Das durchgängig zweisprachige Buch (deutsch/englisch) folgt chronologisch der Geschichte der Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft, vom Verlassen der Heimat bis zur Ansiedlung in Missouri. Ergänzend vertiefen Texte der Ausstellungsmacher und von Gastautoren das Thema der politisch motivierten Auswanderung im 19. Jahrhundert. Das Buch ist durchgängig farbig gedruckt, enthält – auch großformatige – Fotos von Folker Winkelmann und bietet auf 352 Seiten zahlreiche, vielfach unveröffentlichte Abbildungen aus Archiven und privaten Sammlungen. Nach der Veröffentlichung im November 2013 ist das Buch nun auch in den USA erhältlich!
Rolf Schmidt beteiligt sich seit der Gründung der Reisenden Sommer-Republik an der Erforschung und Präsentation der Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft. Gemeinsam mit Ulla Schmidt gab er 2013 einen Nachdruck der „Aufforderung und Erklärung in Betreff einer Auswanderung im Großen aus Teutschland in die Nordamerikanischen Freistaaten“ zusammen mit einer englischen Übersetzung heraus. Auch diese ist nun in den USA erhältlich.
Von Rolf Schmidt liegen auch die beiden historischen Romane „Warten auf die Flut – Ein historischer Harriersand-Roman“ sowie „Der Auszug – Von der Weser zum Missouri“ vor. Sie schildern ausführlich und spannend das tragische Schicksal der Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft. Während der Harriersand-Roman den Zwangsaufenthalt der Münch-Gruppe im Mai 1834 „in einem elenden Kuhstall auf einer ungesunden Weser-Insel“ und ihre Zwistigkeiten und Zweifel am gemeinsamen Plan beschreibt, schildert „Der Auszug“ die leidvolle Atlantikpassage auf der „Medora“, das endgültige Scheitern der geplanten deutschen Staatsgründung und den mühevollen Versuch der Auswanderer-Familien je für sich alleine im amerikanischen Westen eine Existenz aufzubauen.
„Bleiben oder gehen – Die Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft“ ist der Titel einerausstellungspädagogischen Publikation für Lehrer und Schüler der Sekundarstufe, die unter der Leitung von Rita Rohrbach in einem Projektseminar am Historischen Institut der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (Didaktik der Geschichte und Kulturwissenschaften) mit Studierenden erarbeitet wurde. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler von heute können am Beispiel der Gießener Auswanderergesellschaft Ursachen, Verlauf und Schwierigkeiten von Migrations- und Integrationsprozessen verstehen und an einem exemplarischen Beispiel globale Geschichte erarbeiten. Dieses Schülerheft ist zweisprachig auf Deutsch und Englisch erschienen und kann kostenlos von der Ausstellungswebsite heruntergeladen werden.
