The Black Brothers frat at Geissen University, so named for a popular children s book about helping each other in all things to gain success and freedom, became popular with guidance from Karl Follenious (my gramps times 5 older brother ). Karl changed name to Chas Follen (see Whittier, ,s poem about him) and taught at Harvard after escaping Germany for his being a revolutionary. His brother Paul and Frederick Muench, brothers in law, also students at Geissen, brought 500 immigrants to MO early on.

    1. From the University of Giessen’s explanation, and I attended the anniversary of their founding, the Black Bruders were so named for the long black cloaks that they donned. I can’t imagine University students wanting to be named after a “children’s book”.
